The dream of opening my own frozen desert shop has been a lifelong aspiration, taking me on a delightful journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected discoveries. The Flavorful Quest Begins
My frozen desert adventure began with diverse research over the years, exploring possibilities from opening a Carvel Ice Cream Franchise in sunny Southern California to a Gelato Shop in the enchanted city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, fate had other plans for us when we stumbled upon Jeremiah’s Italian Ice in Orlando, Florida. Little did we know that this hidden gem would soon become a family favorite, sparking the dream of opening our very own franchise.
The Lone Star State Beckons
In 2019, the winds of change led us to consider a move to the vibrant Austin, Texas Area. Serendipity struck when we discovered that Jeremiah’s Italian Ice had started franchising. With excitement, we swiftly submitted our franchise application, and by December, we had inked a three-unit area development deal for Northwest Austin including Cedar Park, Leander, and Liberty Hill. Little did we know that our journey would unfold amidst the challenges of a global pandemic.
Frozen Dreams and Challenges
The year 2020 brought unexpected hurdles, from selling our Florida home in January to purchasing a new one in Texas in March, just before the world faced the lock-down due to the onset of the COVID pandemic. Undeterred, we navigated through the turbulent commercial real estate market, facing setbacks and ghosting brokers. Finally, in November 2020, we found our sweet spot, a former frozen yogurt shop that hadn’t been able to weather the storm.
Building Sweet Success
Construction kicked off in early 2021, overcoming setbacks like a burst pipe during an icy February. Despite the challenges, we achieved a soft opening in May, just in time for summer. The community embraced us, and we became an overnight sensation with lines wrapping around the center during our Grand Opening Celebration. Five-star reviews poured in, praising not only our delicious treats but also our exceptional, well-trained staff.
Melting Challenges
The year that followed was a mix of highs and lows, tackling labor shortages, supply chain issues, and even a failed air conditioning unit at the start of the scorching Texas summer. Yet, our resilient team and loyal customers persevered, turning every challenge into an opportunity for growth.
Passing the Scoopers
In August 2022, a local business group enchanted by our store approached us after purchasing a franchise license of their own. Despite our plans for a second store in Leander, my wife and I decided it was time to pass the scoopers on to the right people. The deal was sealed in October 2022, just 18 months after we’d opened our doors.
A Sweet Farewell
As we bid adieu to our frozen desert venture, we’re filled with gratitude for the delightful journey. The second store in Leander recently opened, a testament to the passion and dedication of the new team. With no regrets, we look forward to savoring our favorite tasty frozen treats from Jeremiah’s Italian Ice for years to come, relishing the sweet memories of our dream-turned-reality.
